Mr Justice Birt was born in Kent, but grew up and went to school in Solihull. After studying law at Brasenose College, Oxford, he was called to the Bart. Mr Justice Birt practised from Brick Court Chambers, where he specialised in commercial litigation. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2015, and became a Deputy High Court Judge in 2021. He has been a Judge of the King’s Bench Division of the High Court since October 2025.

Mr Justice Birt’s favourite pastimes are music and spending time with his family.
